Treating Brontophobia, The Fear Of Thunderstorms With Hypnosis

by Alan Densky

Brontophobia is a widespread condition that a great number of people around the world have; the fear of thunder and lightning. For as long as this fear has been around, we have been seeking out ways to overcome it. Today, there are a number of treatment selections in use. To help vanquish this phobia, professionals call for specific hypnotherapy techniques that are shown to work in alleviating anxiety and fears.

Brontophobia sufferers experience an unhealthy fear of storms. Loud, booming thunder and flashes of lightning can spark anxiety and panic attacks in people with brontophobia. Other symptoms include a rapid heartbeat, perspiring, and a strong feeling of fear, to the point where a person feels sick.

For many, the fear of lightning and thunder develops early, when as children, we cower under blankets during a bad storm. Brontophobia can be especially difficult for young children. Many scared children feel powerless during a storm, and their mothers and fathers often feel unable to help them cope with their anxieties.

Even in spite of its common occurrence in children, brontophobia can develop at any time in life, often after a person has an experience such as getting shocked, which recalls a flash of lightning. A traumatic event such as living through a natural disaster may also cause a fear of thunder and lightning.

An individual may come to link loud noises, the sensation of pain, or terror with rainy weather, which may grow into a full-blown phobia. Brontophobia is so common that it's even seen in many animals; for example, many pet owners notice that their pet dogs seem frightened in bad weather.

People with brontophobia try to avoid hearing or seeing storms. They may suffer anxiety during storm disasters such as tornadoes. This can put them in harm's way if they are unable to function under circumstances which requires them to remain calm and respond quickly.

People with brontophobia often despise storm season, often struggling in summer when thunderstorms are common. They might continually check weather conditions and act extra cautious during bouts of bad weather. To other people, these actions may seem obsessive and highly paranoid. Phobia suffers may find this condition slowly taking control of their lives.

There are many options available for treating brontophobia and other phobias. High-profile ones include counseling, anti-anxiety medication, and hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy tends to deliver safer, faster results and it is non-invasive, having no negative side effects. For these reasons and more, hypnotherapy is a popular choice of treatment.

Hypnosis therapy is highly effective as a form of stress-relief therapy and has long been used for its soothing properties. By beginning with stress-relief techniques, hypnotherapy helps tense, agitated phobia sufferers begin the process of overcoming their fears. When an individual is feeling tranquil, it is easier for hypnotherapy techniques to direct the unconscious mind into a phobia-free thought process.

The vast majority of phobias are linked to negative stimuli, which become connected to fear deep within the unconscious mind. For people with brontophobia, the sound of thunder, the flash of lightning, or even the sight of dark clouds often triggers fear. Hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) work at the unconscious level of the mind to disconnect fear from these triggers to provide powerful phobia relief. One of the most successful techniques is called the NLP Visual/Kinesthetic Disassociation.

Ericksonian hypnotherapy is a form of hypnotherapy that is often used to treat phobia-related stress. Named after pioneering developer, Dr. Milton Erickson, MD, this form of therapy uses indirect suggestions embedded in stories, metaphors, and conversation to cure a phobia. Indirect suggestions work better than traditional post-hypnotic direct suggestions because we tend to resist commands. Suggestions which are concealed from conscious thought are much better able to empower people to vanquish their fears.

Ericksonian hypnotherapy and NLP techniques have an additional advantage over other hypnotherapy programs because they are generalized to work for any phobia. So a single program is suitable for treating any phobia, or even more than one phobia if required. Plus, each program combines many different techniques to be effective for everyone.

For many, hypnotic therapy is the perfect treatment choice, which offers quick and long-lasting results. Shivering in bed and being scared is not the way a phobia sufferer should have to live. With hypnotherapy and NLP techniques, virtually everyone can overcome this serious phobia.
