Get Microdermabrasion in Your own Home

by Sara Kitch

Microdermabrasion is a common cosmetic procedure in which the skin is scrub or abraded with finely ground mineral crystals to exfoliate the skin. It is usually performed in a doctor's office or spa center. However, a microdermabrasion cream and/or microdermabrasion kits can give you the same results but in the comfort of your own home.

First off, let's review the history of microdermabrasion to, then, move on to how you can get its benefits without medical supervision.

Before Microdermabrasion

The idea of abrading the skin has been used for many centuries. It has been shown that Egyptian doctors as far back as 1500 BC would use a type of sandpaper to smooth out scars. During the 1900's in Germany, a device was designed with rotating wheels and rasps to be used as an exfoliating apparatus.

Some 50 years, a motorized machine with wire brushes replaced the hand powered devices. Dermabrasion was born. It quickly became a popular procedure for treating skin blemishes, aging skin and scars, like acne scars. However, its popularity could not disguise the problems that dermabrasion caused. For example, it was painful and needed to be performed with anesthesia, it required weeks for the top layers of the skin to heal back and it often caused scars.

In response to these side effects, the first microdermabrasion machine was created in 1985. The demand for microdermabrasion machines has exploded since they first appeared. The majority of the machines on the market find their way to doctor's offices and day or health spas.

Home Microdermabrasion Kits and Microdermabrasion Creams

Because of the popularity of microdermabrasion, microdermabrasion kits are now available in most every drug store. There is a wide range of creams and kits that you can use in your home and at an affordable price.

There are two kinds of microdermabrasion kits. The first kind comes with a wand similar to the one used by professional machines. This types of kits usually include a includes special attachments, a special scrub or gel and a microdermabrasion guide, a special gel for scrubbing and different attachments.

The second kind is a cream that contain an abrasive agent to exfoliate the skin. Our special microdermabrasion cream contains the most complete skin regenerating serum with the same abrading micro-crystals used with professional microdermabrasion machines. The special serum is derived from the Helix aspersa (common garden snail) and is known for protecting, renewing, repairing and deeply moisturizing the skin.

The main difference between the two is price. The kits that come with wands tend to be more expensive. However, both of these types are a good way to rid your skin of imperfections.
